Conceptual Design Study:
Dynamic Modern Workplace
Developed by Northern Lights Interior Designs, this conceptual workplace design introduces Basso Marketing Agency to the vibrant and evolving landscape of downtown Grand Rapids, Michigan—a city where creativity, innovation, and community intersect.
Known for its rich history in furniture manufacturing and architecture, Grand Rapids offers a unique foundation for design that blends industrial character with modern expression. This project embraces that duality, creating a space that reflects both the city’s heritage and the forward-thinking energy of its growing, design-conscious population. With a strong demographic of young professionals and entrepreneurs, the downtown environment presents an opportunity for Basso to expand its presence within a dynamic and culturally diverse market. The design responds to this context by creating a workplace that is not only functional, but also inspiring—supporting creativity, collaboration, and innovation at every level.
Drawing from Basso’s own philosophy—“seeing the world in color and painting outside the lines”—the design concept celebrates individuality, expression, and bold thinking. The space is envisioned as a creative hub where brand strategy, digital innovation, and human connection come together in a seamless and engaging environment.
Through a balance of structure and flexibility, industrial influence and modern refinement, the design creates a distinctive identity for Basso within Grand Rapids—one that honors the past while embracing the future. The result is a workplace designed to inspire both the creators within it and the brands they shape.
Visionary Consultation - Discovery Insights
The inspiration for this project was guided by a focused discovery process exploring Basso Marketing Agency’s brand identity, the energy of downtown Grand Rapids, and the evolving needs of today’s workplace.
As reflected in the mood boards, the design draws from the city’s vibrant culture, waterfront setting, and rich industrial history, paired with insights into a predominantly young, active demographic—informing a direction that is both energetic and forward-thinking. Basso’s bold brand identity and messaging—centered on creativity and “thinking outside the box”—inspired a concept rooted in individuality and expressive design. Elements such as dynamic lighting, branded graphics, and playful features were explored to reflect the agency’s collaborative and innovative culture. The color palette is directly derived from Basso’s branding, incorporating cool neutrals, bold blues, vibrant greens, and black accents to reinforce brand identity while supporting a refined yet energetic aesthetic. Together, these insights shaped a workplace concept that is visually compelling, brand-driven, and designed to support creativity, collaboration, and bold, thoughtful design.

Spatial Relationships & Planning Evolution
The development of the floor plan began with a detailed adjacency matrix, used to analyze the relationships between program elements and identify priorities for proximity, separation, and flow. This analytical framework established the foundation for how each space would function in relation to one another. From this data-driven approach, a bubble diagram was created to visually translate these relationships into spatial groupings. Areas requiring strong adjacency—such as reception and conference, or open office and support spaces—were positioned in close proximity, while spaces requiring privacy—such as private offices—were intentionally buffered from high-traffic zones. The bubble diagram allowed for exploration of circulation patterns, zoning, and hierarchy, transforming abstract relationships into a conceptual layout. This process ensured a natural progression from public to private spaces, while maintaining intuitive movement and operational efficiency. Together, the adjacency matrix and bubble diagram illustrate the evolution from analytical planning to spatial concept—demonstrating a thoughtful and intentional approach to workplace design.
Where structure meets intuition—transforming data into a seamless spatial experience.

Visionary Consultation - Discovery Insights
The vision for Northern Spine & Pain Institute emerged from a desire to transform the traditional clinical experience into a restorative healthcare environment centered on comfort, dignity, and emotional well-being. Serving individuals experiencing chronic pain, mobility limitations, and sensory sensitivity, the design approach focused on creating spaces that feel calming, intuitive, and supportive from the moment patients arrive.
Inspired by evidence-based healthcare design and hospitality-driven environments, the concept integrates soft layered lighting, acoustical comfort, warm natural materials, and biophilic influences to reduce anxiety and sensory overstimulation. Curved architectural forms, tactile textures, and visual connections to nature contribute to an atmosphere that feels quiet, grounded, and restorative rather than institutional.
To further elevate the patient experience, the facility incorporates several luxury hospitality-inspired amenities thoughtfully integrated throughout the clinic. These include a dedicated family lounge complete with a private restroom, quiet retreat area, kitchenette, dining space, and comfortable lounging accommodations designed to support both patients and caregivers during extended visits or treatment periods. These restorative spaces provide opportunities for privacy, relaxation, and emotional decompression while reinforcing a sense of warmth, reassurance, and human connection.
The clinic’s spatial organization prioritizes intuitive wayfinding, patient privacy, accessibility, and operational efficiency while supporting compassionate, patient-centered care. Concierge-inspired reception services, restorative waiting environments, and wellness-focused material selections further enhance the emotional experience of healthcare, reflecting the clinic’s commitment to advanced care delivered through comfort, reassurance, and thoughtfully designed healing environments.
Final - Floor Plan
The final floor plan for Northern Spine & Pain Institute was thoughtfully designed to create a restorative, hospitality-inspired healthcare environment that balances advanced clinical functionality with patient comfort and well-being. The layout features a dedicated family lounge complete with an ADA-accessible restroom, private storage closet for personal belongings and clothing, kitchenette, dining area, and comfortable lounge seating to support both patients and caregivers during extended visits. Adjacent to the patient suite, a nurses charting station provides direct clinical support while maintaining efficient patient observation and accessibility. The private patient room includes a spacious ADA-compliant bathroom with a full accessible shower and connects directly to the procedure room through sliding glass doors, allowing for seamless patient transitions and enhanced privacy. Additional program spaces include an exam room, two physician offices, a concierge reception workstation, separate hospitality manager’s office, conference room, centralized nurses station with four workstations, coffee bar, office supply/storage area, and a staff support suite featuring an ADA-compliant restroom with shower and adjacent locker room. Together, the floor plan creates a cohesive healthcare environment centered on comfort, dignity, efficiency, and compassionate patient care.
Reflected Ceiling Plan
The reflected ceiling plan for Northern Spine & Pain Institute was designed to support sensory comfort, spatial clarity, and a restorative patient experience through layered lighting and ceiling articulation. A combination of acoustic ceiling systems, recessed linear lighting, decorative fixtures, indirect LED illumination, and raised ceiling elements creates visual warmth while minimizing glare and overstimulation throughout the clinic environment. Ceiling accents and integrated lighting details introduce a hospitality-inspired aesthetic that softens the traditional clinical atmosphere and reinforces the project’s biophilic design approach. Strategic lighting placement enhances wayfinding, supports staff functionality, and contributes to patient comfort within both waiting and clinical spaces. Decorative chandeliers and feature lighting elements further establish moments of visual interest and luxury, while maintaining a calm, quiet, and human-centered healthcare environment.
